Work Experience

July 2010 – current: Web Producer @ Mortar (San Francisco)

Mortar is a San Francisco-based advertising agency.

Initially joining Mortar as a Senior Account Executive and later transitioning to the role of Web Producer, I became more cognizant of the interactive process here. Sitemaps, wireframes, content strategy — I’d been doing a semblance of these all along without putting a name to the process, until I came here and my knowledge of UX blossomed.

My role varies from project-to-project with a mix of producing/project management, account servicing, UX work (mainly site audits, sitemaps, and wireframes) and programming. I also took on the role of creative resource manager (traffic) for about a year.

Highlights:

  • Brought our 5-years-in-the-making website to life in 3 months, by wrangling internal stakeholders and keeping everyone on task and schedule.
  • Completed my first iPad app ever in a lightning quick turnaround of 1 month from proposal to launch.
July 2008 – February 2010: Senior Account Executive @ REAP Interactive (Singapore)

REAP is the interactive media arm of TNBT (The Next Big Thing), an integrated advertising agency that operates across Southeast Asia.

Together with an immediate team of 10 others, I created a variety of websites, games, banners and microsites. My role was primarily client servicing and project management, although I pitched in doing design and programming when the creative team was backed up.

  • Worked with well-known consumer brands, such as MasterCard, The Body Shop (Asia Pacific), Holiday Inn (Singapore) and FANCL (Japanese skincare brand).
  • Pulled a 33-hour continuous shift with my teammates in order to hit a launch deadline. McDonald’s delivery was our savior.
June 2007 – July 2008: Business Development Executive @ Design Illustrated (Singapore)

A former colleague brought me in to start a social enterprise offering graphic and web design services under his nonprofit organization. Thus, Design Illustrated was born.

This was a jack-of-all-trades role that included finding new business, managing projects, designing websites and other collateral, programming websites, and managing HR and finance. It was a small enterprise consisting of 5 people at its peak, and I had a supervisory role to 3 other people.

  • Secured over 30 clients during the 1 year I was there, including National University Hospital, The Village @ Jurong Hill (shopping mall), Spa Elements (local spa chain) and What’s Good? (clothing line).
  • Learned PHP on the job — programming custom database-driven websites and customizing eCommerce engines.
June 2006 – February 2007: Senior Sales Executive @ Marcus Evans (Singapore)

Marcus Evans organizes thousands of specialized conferences for senior-level executives every year around the world. I worked on the sales team and was responsible for securing attendees for these conferences.

Although we worked in teams, this was mostly an individual effort. Each person needed to curate their own leads and hit their own KPIs. It involved a lot of cold calling, navigating through gatekeepers and developing specific industry knowledge to hold conversations with C-level and senior executives around the world on the benefits of attending a particular conference.

  • In the 9 months that I was there, I was promoted from Sales Executive to Senior Sales Executive.
  • Once got the mobile phone of a Thai bank’s CIO and successfully closed a sale during his golf game.
